about the guides

Nick & Dewi met in 2012 guiding holidays with SwimTrek from our B&B Mincarlo. They were inspired to join forces; enjoying the camaraderie of the swimmers, loving the refreshing sea and the colourful vistas around the islands; motivated by the beauty of the place, by its clear waters and the variety of swims available. Nick was ready with plenty of local knowledge and a love of swimming around the islands, Dewi with a heap of coaching and swim-guiding experience behind him.

They wanted to do something spectacular, demanding but achievable: the Scilly Swim Challenge was founded in 2014. Now with a strong desire to share the delights of Scilly with swimmers in a more relaxed situation, the Luxury Swim Holidays are here in partnership with the fabulous Hotel Karma St. Martin’s – come along & immerse yourself in Scilly’s watery beauty!

Nick Lishman

Swim teacher, run leader, mountain-bike instructor and beach lifeguard; Nick has decades of experience of the sea and islands of Scilly. A keen interest in nutrition and in the strengths of the body and mind in sport combine with a genuine passion for his home and the experiences to be found there.

Dewi Winkle

Retired Parachute Regiment Officer with experience of sports event management, tutoring and mentoring. Highly motivated and energetic sports focussed organiser and planner with experience Worldwide gained as Parachute Regiment Officer, Event Organiser and Triathlon Coach. Dewi is loyal, trustworthy and responsible; he certainly has the ability to motivate and facilitate, and we think he’s an all-round top bloke!

am i a good enough swimmer?

yes, you are! The holidays cater for swimmers of different paces and strengths, however it is important that your basic swim fitness is good, so some regular swim training leading up to the holiday would be useful.

how far will we swim each day?

we accommodate all swimmers – distances will vary and everyone will be offered the opportunity to do more or less. The shortest swims will be around 1km and the longest nearer 3-4km (these will be mixed and matched to suit the group, the conditions and the tides).

do I need a wetsuit?

we would suggest a wetsuit for those not used to open water swimming and would be happy to recommend types/brands. If you do intend to swim without a wetsuit then cold water acclimatisation is important, especially if you only train in a heated pool.

what will the water temperature be?

around 13-14°C
